My Story

My relationship with games began earlier than I can fully remember.

Before elementary school, I had already found my way into Minecraft. Looking back, it was probably the first game that meant something to me in any real sense. No right answers, no fixed objectives — just imagination and choice, stretching outward in every direction. For someone with little experience of games at the time, it felt like a door swung open without warning.

I spent most of my childhood soaked in the internet. In a sense, I was exactly the kind of kid people worry about. But I don't think of that time as wasted. It taught me to encounter information on my own terms, to think without being told how, and somewhere along the way I developed a habit of turning inward and examining myself that has never really left.

Years passed. I played a lot of games, but none of them ever crossed five hundred hours — until I met Apex Legends.

There's some irony in that. FPS games were never my strength; the only one I'd played before was CS. A friend mentioned Apex offhandedly during Season 18, and I downloaded it without much expectation. The game was far from its best at that point — bad seasons, frustrating balance decisions — and yet something about its rhythm kept pulling me back.

During one of the harder stretches of my life, Apex became a place that took me in. I reconnected with old friends I hadn't spoken to in years. I met people in matches who eventually became the teammates I'd run with across multiple seasons. That period left a particular kind of memory — wins and losses, long silences and laughter — a line that wasn't straight but was real.

Then one day it hit me: I had never once seriously tried to improve. No one said anything. But the numbers didn't lie, and I knew what they meant. I was the weak link. I was falling behind.

In a game, if you can't keep up, you go quiet. In life, if someone moves on without you, there's often nothing to say either.

I kept thinking: I can't be someone who doesn't matter in any direction.

So I started taking it seriously.

I rewatched my own footage, studied players who were better than me, and drilled mechanics in the Firing Range until I'd spent more time there than in actual matches.

From scraping through Platinum with a 0.4 KD, to reaching Master for the first time in Season 25, to touching Predator in Season 29 — none of it was dramatic. I just spent around 3500 hours closing the distance between where I was and where others already stood.

I don't think I have talent. If there's anything that kept me going, it was probably just a stubborn refusal to have nothing to show for myself.

Alongside Apex, VRChat gradually became something important to me as well. I came to it expecting a novelty — a metaverse thing to try once. But over time it revealed itself as something else: a space where people from different countries, languages, and backgrounds actually meet each other. For the first time I felt the warmth of strangers in a way that was direct and immediate. Whether it was real or not, I can't say for certain. But it felt light in a way I hadn't expected human connection to feel.

That experience is what pushed me to start learning Japanese seriously — to be able to talk to more people, and to leave myself more ways into worlds that aren't my own.

I'm still someone who ties himself in knots. I'm not good at saying what I mean, and I often lose track of my own feelings while trying to account for everyone else's. But I'm learning. Learning to sit with my emotions rather than step around them, and slowly trying to be more honest with the people around me.

If anyone remembers me after reading this, I hope what they remember isn't the numbers or the small achievements, but the person who kept moving forward — still trying to understand the world, and himself.
